If You Simply Can’t Get to a Class...
Sometimes, getting to yoga is just too challenging. This is where a home practice comes in.
Steps to a Home Practice
- The first step is to find a place where you can experience some peace and quiet in your home. Perhaps while the kids are napping, or while they are doing their homework, or before they wake up… or after they go to bed. Be creative. Any space—indoors or out—where you can practice, uninterrupted, for a solid block of time, will do.
- Next, abandon your expectation of how long you should practice. Although public classes are generally an hour to 90 minutes long (or sometimes longer), don’t get hung up on having to find that much time. We’ve known famous yoga teachers who swear by their 20-minute a day practice. Anything is much, much better than nothing.
- Be consistent. Try to make it a part of your daily or weekly routine. And if you can’t…. don’t worry about it. Just practice when you can!
- Don’t get caught up in doing it “right”. You can follow a video (we’ll give you some recommendations below), find an instructional book (ditto), or simply make it up as you go along! If you are listening to your body and following your own intuition, virtually any combination of postures can constitute a solid yoga session.
- Always, always give yourself time to wind down after each session, with a 5-15 minute savasana. This seemingly lazy posture is one of the most vital components of any yoga practice. It gives your body a chance to integrate the work you have just done, and it gives your mind a chance to settle. Consider it a gift to yourself. You deserve it!
